چکیده

lichens are composite organisms formed by a fungus and a green alga and / or a blue-green bacterium. they are recognized as being very sensitive to atmospheric pollution and respond to factors that influence human and environmental healths. since 1860, lichen has been identified as a biological indicator to detect air pollution in great britain and europe. lichens have the high sensitivityto nitrogen dioxide, ozone, fluorine and heavy metals. the purpose of this study was lichen’s chlorophyll changes in contact with different concentrations of o3 and no2 pollutants in urban environments. lecanora muralis transported into special bags in contact with o3 gas at concentrations of 30, 100 and 200 ppb and no2 gas at concentrations 60, 100 and 200 ppb respectively. after one and three hours, they moved to the laboratory. their chlorophyll (chlorophyll a, b, chlorophyll a + b and the ratio od435 / od415) was extracted by immersion of the building 20 mg weight lichens in 10 ml dmso solution. data was analysed to evaluate the correlation and changes in amount of pollutants and concentrations of chlorophyll degradation. destruction of chlorophyll with positive correlation (p 0.05 were observed. this study showed that lecanora muralis can be used as a biological indicator in monitoring emissions of ozone and no2 in urban area.

Atmospheric protein chemistry influenced by anthropogenic air pollutants: nitration and oligomerization upon exposure to ozone and nitrogen dioxide.

The allergenic potential of airborne proteins may be enhanced via post-translational modification induced by air pollutants like ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). The molecular mechanisms and kinetics of the chemical modifications that enhance the allergenicity of proteins, however, are still not fully understood. Here, protein tyrosine nitration and oligomerization upon simultaneous expos...

Photochemical ozone and nitric oxide formation in air--nitrogen dioxide mixtures containing sulfur dioxide or chlorine.

Experiments were performed to investigate the effects of sulfur dioxide (O-10 ppm) and chlorine (O-15 ppm) on ozone and nitric oxide concentrations in irradiated mixtures of nitrogen dioxide (1-5 ppm) and air. The mixtures were irradiated by ultraviolet fluorescent lamps while flowing at a steady speed through a 9 m long, 15.2 cm i.d. Pyrex tube. The presence of sulfur dioxide produced no measu...

Combined exposure to ozone and nitrogen dioxide.

The combined effects of ozone and nitrogen dioxide were assessed in an in vitro test system utilizing human red cells. In general, these two pollutants had additive effects on the parameters measured which included osmotic fragility, acetylcholinesterase activity, lipid peroxidation, reduced glutathione and methemoglobin levels. However, at lower pollutant doses a synergistic increase in lipid ...

Revising the slant column density retrieval of nitrogen dioxide observed by the Ozone Monitoring Instrument

Nitrogen dioxide retrievals from the Aura/Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) have been used extensively over the past decade, particularly in the study of tropospheric air quality. Recent comparisons of OMI NO2 with independent data sets and models suggested that the OMI values of slant column density (SCD) and stratospheric vertical column density (VCD) in both the NASA OMNO2 and Royal Netherla...

Indoor air distribution of nitrogen dioxide and ozone in urban hospitals.

Indoor air pollution has recently become a public concern in Taiwan. People recognize that indoor air quality (IAQ) may be more important than outdoor air quality because they spend over 80% of their time indoors. IAQ could affect health and comfort of building occupants. The objectives of this study are (1) to characterize the indoor concentrations of selected air pollutants at two hospitals i...
